The Crociatine

The Association Sole Luna Un ponte tra le culture presented , in the frame of the Sole Luna Festival 2013, the shows organized by the International Museum of Puppetry Antonio Pasqualino in Palermo that told the story of the Crusades. The ” Crociatine “ , designed primarily for an audience of children, was also a great attraction for men and women and especially for the tourists who had known and experienced the historical tradition of the Sicilian Opera dei Pupi under the starry sky on the beautiful Palermo setting of the Sant’Anna courtyard .

The master puppeteers set up a small open-air theater with puppets to represent the story of the Crusades in the most original, but at the same time, traditional way, once again demonstrating the universality of this expressive instrument , extraordinary and timeless which can stimulate both the traditional and contemporary artist. Able to entertain the kids is similarly able to convey the conceptual art of one of the most sophisticated artists of today .

The theme of ” Crusades ” was born when we decided to invite the Egyptian artist Wael Shawky, which has produced two video –art of the Cabaret Crusades series whose actors are ceramic Puppets. The screenings of the two video arts took place in the courtyard of St. Anna immediately after the Sicilian puppet shows that had opened two evenings characterized by the theme of Puppets .

The project , a real bridge between cultures, the leitmotif of our association , was an opportunity to compare art and history, contemporary and tradition and to enhance the Sicilian identity historically and symbolically represented by the Opera of Pupi .
