EDITORIAL BY LUCIA VENTURATO
“For the second year, Sole Luna-Un ponte tra le culture has curated the selection of the DOC showcase of the Human Rights Festival in Milan, an event that, since its debut, has attracted a heterogeneous audience and has represented all the age groups and social strata of the territory of the city and the province; Not just Italians but also groups of migrants resident or awaiting recognition. We particularly care about this partnership with Reset-Human Rights for the profound sharing of associative purposes, for the common feeling of the the need to deal with uncomfortable and difficult issues, which are an integral part of our daily life, for the importance of doing it in a metropolitan city like Milan, the main industrial, commercial and financial center of Italy, natural connection bridge with Mittel-Europa. We are proud of being part of this team and, at the same time, we ahve a great sense of responsibility to propose to the audience the best of the international documentrary cinema. We will present 19 films in competition in the DOC section, and 3 film out of competition in the EDU section. When composing the exhibition from a documentary point of view, we followed the narrative-anthropological thread, while from the artistic point of view it was not difficult to make a comprehensive selection maintaining a balance between the importance of the story and the value of the direction, thanks to the large number of great quality film submissions received.The subject of the second edition of the FDU is “freedom of expression”; The centrality of this right in the ranks of human rights has led us towards more declinations of the subject itself. We have emphasized its narrower meaning and also its intime sense as “freedom of thought” and “freedom to express the one’s own diversity ” from a journalistic point of view as ” inquiry “and again, in a broader sense, as” multiculturalism “. Among the several films we will discover Nora’s story who reaches Daesh in Syria, the story of Saar who decides to go back to Israel to die, because of his illness, Alex following the Chechen war, Mohesen discovering the Taliban in their habitat, 100 years of prejudice in Italian cinema. This year, we could not fail to have a specific focus on the issue of migratory flows and their related issues; the journey, the survival, the arrival, the hope, the welcome, the rejection, the legal practice, and the coveted work. Among these stories there is finally the opportunity to appreciate the work of many not-well-known Italian and European voluntary institutional realities and that with diligence help migrants to constitute propositive examples to follow. Sole Luna-Un ponte tra le culture has chosen for Milan stories of men, women and children who express strength, courage, loyalty, solidarity, conscious pain, hope for ransom; people who are not looking for compassionate pity and charity, but who are eager to finally find a rich source of that pietas which is the primary duty of man. ”
