Green decalogue
Our commitment to the environment is expressed through our compliance with the national Green Festival guidelines drafted by AFIC (Association of Italian Film Festivals) to promote environmental sustainability at events and to guide staff and volunteers in adopting environmentally sustainable work practices. We will carry out a series of concrete actions that are summarized in this decalogue.
1. Sustainable mobility
The festival is based in the historic center of Palermo, in a pedestrian area. We encourage guests, staff, and audience to reach the festival venues through sustainable forms of mobility: on foot, by bicycle, scooters, or public transportation. To facilitate sustainable travel, especially for those unfamiliar with the city, we will share a map with festival locations, bike, and scooter rental points, as well as tables with public transportation schedules.
2. Sustainable energy consumption
The festival has been and continues to be committed to measuring its carbon footprint for both energy consumption and waste production. Staff are encouraged to turn off all electrical and electronic equipment when the festival is inactive. It is also encouraged to reduce the lighting to the minimum necessary in the premises used during the festival, and to turn off lights when not needed.
3. Printing of handouts
Promotional material is printed on FSC®-labeled paper, which identifies products containing wood from forests managed properly and responsibly according to strict environmental, social, and economic standards. The number of printed materials is kept to a minimum: postcards and a catalog with the schedule. To avoid paper waste, staff are encouraged to reduce the printing of materials, favoring the electronic format, and working on documents through shared clouds. Audience voting is managed through an online voting system.
4. Setups
We favor renewable, recycled, and recyclable materials for setups, without reference to the edition number, so they can be reused in the future. Suppliers are all local.
5. Waste management
During the festival, waste collection is implemented, and efforts are made to reduce waste production as much as possible through the careful selection of set-ups and materials, and a training aimed at all staff. Materials used for appetizers are all compostable, and the use of reusable water bottles for staff and audience is encouraged.
6. Gadget production
The production of gadgets will be limited to cotton bags and T-shirts only, which do not bear the number of the specific edition and can be used every year, thus limiting waste. Awards for the winners of the various sections of the festival are made of wood. Staff and guest badges are made of recycled paper with a cotton string.
7. Guest management
Sole Luna guests are accommodated in areas very close to the venue to make it easier to reach by foot or bicycle. The hotel that hosts our guests embraces the same values: it is eco-friendly, awarded with the ISO 14001 certification for its commitment to preserving in the environment. Staff will provide information on how to reach the beaches and other tourist locations by public transportation and sharing mobility.
8. Food sustainability
The buffets offered at the festival are calculated in order to avoid food waste and using mainly vegan and vegetarian products, which are in season and have a low environmental impact.
The food court is managed by Moltivolti, which is particularly attentive to the use of local products and to environmental and social sustainability, for an enhancement of local products and support of small Sicilian businesses. No beverages in plastic bottles will be served. Single-dose and single-portion packages will not be served. Biodegradable and compostable tableware will be used.
9. Environmental culture and social sustainability
The Festival promotes gender equality and full participation, in terms of autonomous accessibility, safety, comfort and well-being as well. The Festival has Enel Green Power as its main sponsor, with whom it shares a focus on renewable energy.
In 2018 Sole Luna Doc Film Festival co-founded the international network FILM FOR OUR FUTURE, which brings together a group of European festivals that want to promote the sustainable development goals of the EU agenda. The Festival organizes meetings or sections dedicated to the environment that are open to all. Every year it organizes the summer festival Cinema in Cantina, offering documentaries about the environment using 100% solar energy for its projections.
10. Training and media
The festival’s media plan includes articles and posts to talk about the festival’s orientation towards compliance with the principles of sustainability, ensuring that concrete actions are carried out. We propose an environmental training for staff and volunteers to promote compliance with the environmental policies of the Sole Luna Doc Film Festival.
