International jury

Gabrielle Brady (1984) is a UK-Australian filmmaker who for the past ten years has lived between the Australian central desert, Mongolia, Indonesia, Cuba, Mexico and Europe. Gabrielle makes cinematic documentary films. She is currently based in Berlin. Gabrielle’s award-winning debut feature film Island of the hungry ghosts (2018) is being shown in international film festivals and has had a theatrical release in the US, UK, Germany and Australia. The film has won over 40 awards including Best Documentary at the Tribeca Film festival and the Byens-Chagoll Award at Visions du Réel. She won also the Best Documentary Award at Sole Luna Doc Film Festival 14th edition. She is in development for her next feature film project, set in Mongolia, The wolves always come at night.

Associate Professor at Università degli Studi di Palermo where she teaches Film history and Film Theories. Among her publications: Splendore e miseria del cinema. Le Histoire(s) di Jean-Luc Godard (with A. Scarlato and L. Venzi, Pellegrini, 2010); La ricerca del metodo. Antropologia e storia delle forme in S.M. Ejzenštejn  (Mimesis, 2010, winner of “Maurizio Grande” competition in 2011); she contributed in the Lessico del cinema italiano. Forme di vita e forme di rappresentazione (a cura di R. De Gaetano, 2015). She also edited: Clint Eastwood (with A. Canadè, Pellegrini, 2012); Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (with L. Venzi, Pellegrini, 2013); Il cinema russo attraverso i film with A. Scarlato, Carocci, 2013), Il cinema del nuovo millennio. Geografie, forme, autori (Carocci, 2020). For Marsilio publishing company she curated the Italian edition of Il metodo di S.M. Ejzenštejn (2020). Member of the steering committee of the magazine “Fata Morgana. Quadrimestrale di cinema e visioni”, she is also part of the scientific committee of the magazine K. Revue trans-européenne de philosophie et arts. With C. Uva e G. Manzoli she is responsible of “Film” series collection “Le Bussole” (Carocci).

Her learning journey through images began under the guidance of her father, the American filmmaker Robert Kramer, with whom she worked in many of his productions, both on set and in the editing room until his death in 1999. After the death of her father, with Julien Cloquet (sound engineer), she completed his latest film, Cités de la plaine presented in 2000 at the Cannes Film Festival, a due consideration on the relationship between migratory movements and the irremediable contradictions and fragilities of globalized and neoliberal society still very relevant today. Over the past twenty years, she continued to look after Kramer’s film archive, and she has recently held a major retrospective at the Cinémathèque Française in Paris, with over thirty of his films. From Steve Dwoskin she learned how to deal with experimental cinema and aesthetic research in video. She made more than a dozen videos and documentaries and a 35mm film, Killer of Beauty, produced in Rome, at Villa Medici, in 2009. She studied Photography with John Willis at Marlboro College (Vermont, 1993), History of Photography with Shelley Rice at the School of Visual Art (New York, 1995) and Contemporary Art with Alain Fleischer and Sarkis at Le Fresnoy (Roubaix, 2001) and more recently also at Bela Tarr’s Film Factory (Sarajevo, 2013). Photography (in 35mm) continues to be her favourite medium. Her latest photographic exhibition, Lumen Opaticum was exhibited at the Film Gallery in Paris last winter. (

Graduated in Philosophy at Pisa University, he holds a PhD in Philosophy of Communication and Performing Arts at the University of Calabria, with a thesis on thoughts on film in French contemporary philosophy. Member of the Editorial boards of Gli asini and Fata Morgana – Quadrimestrale di Cinema e Visioni magazine, he has collaborated with Il Manifesto, Filmcritica, Duellanti, Rapporto confidenziale, Lo Straniero by writing about cinema, and he has also collaborated with Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani. Cultural activist and literary translator, he edited the Italian edition of two works by Jacques Rancière (Ai bordi del politico, Napoli 2011; Scarti. Il cinema tra politica e letteratura, Cosenza 2013) and translated works of Pierre Donadieu, Michel Foucault, Madame de Staël, Gilles Lipovetsky and Pierre Bayard. He was the Programmer of Sicilia Queer Filmfest, editor of its catalogue since its first edition and the artistic director since its third editions. He teaches History and Philosophy in High School.


He is a movie editor of more than 80 feature movies and documentaries presented in the most important international festivals and awarded by many prizes, like the Special Jury Prize at Venice Film Festival for Morte di un matematico napoletano in 1992, the Golden Lion for Sacro GRA in 2013, the Golden Bear at Berlin in 2016 for Fire at Sea. He has been the main editor Bernardo Bertolucci’s collaborator since Besieged (1998), The Dreamers (2003) and You and Me (2012). Besides being movie editor in all Gianfranco Rosi and Mario Martone’s movies, he has also collaborated with Bernardo Bertolucci, Marco Bechis, Paolo Virzì, Zhang Yuan, Apitchapong Weerasethakul, Paolo Rosa, Francesca Archibugi, Alessandro Rossetto, Mohammed Soudani, Stefano Mordini, Lais Bodansky, Daniele Ciprì and Franco Maresco, Roberto Andò, Laura Bispuri, Ciro Guerra.

His documentary La scuola d’estate (2014) about Luca Ronconi has been presented at the Torino Film Festival, at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, at Doclisboa and in many Italian cinemas; it won the Special Prize Nastri d’Argento. His last film, Lorello e Brunello, 2017, was presented to the international competition at the Torino Film Festival winning several prizes and to the Berlinale and Rotterdam, Annecy, La Roche and all most all over the word.
