1938-2018: eighty years from the Promulgation of Fascist Racial Laws. An important anniversary and unfortunately still very current. Eighty years ago the Italian people, who were not traditionally anti-Semitic, were driven by fascist propaganda to accept the persecution of a minority that had lived peacefully in Italy for centuries. How was this possible? And how much do we still know today of that historical moment? 1938 diversi wants to tell what the implementation of those laws meant for Italian Jews, and how the Jewish and non-Jewish population experienced racism and persecution. The film won the 2019 Silver Ribbon for Best Documentary of the Real and got the Hrns Special Mention for Human Rights (Human Rights Nights Association) at the 75th Venice Film Festival.

What was the role of women in the Italian Resistance? What did that period of struggle and emancipation mean to them and what did they get at the end of the war? Libere is a story based on the voices of those women, thanks to the recovery of original witnesses and historical images. Through the editing of archive materials and excerpts from interviews with twenty partisans, carried out in the last forty years by the ANCR and other research institutes, a new vision of the period of the Resistance and of the first postwar period emerges, to which the first real birth of feminism dates back. According the protagonists the struggle is an instrument of emancipation and of search for freedom: they discover a “liberated” sexuality, they ask for equality at work and in the family.

Filming the house of her grandparents near Padua, Martina identifies a map of places that belonged to their past. Antonio was born in Tripoli, Libya, when this was an Italian colony, and there he married Narcisa. They were forced to leave the country suddenly in 1970, after Gaddafi’s coup. With the help of a young Libyan contacted via social media, Martina collects images of what has become today the “home” of her grandparents. The names of some roads have totally changed, others not. Through the exchange of images and chats, the relationship between the two becomes deeper. The web allows them to gradually overcome the physical and cultural boundaries that separate their lives, bringing us into a world in which the media have no access.
