Galleria d’Arte Moderna. Complesso monumentale di Sant’Anna alla Misericordia

The Galleria d’Arte Moderna headquarters has been, since December 2006, the monumental complex of Sant’Anna alla Misericordia. The Museum is accessed from the oldest part of the complex, Palazzo Bonet, adjacent to the ancient Franciscan convent, a model of aristocratic residential building of the fifteenth century. Built around 1480 by the Catalan merchant Gaspare Bonet, in the following century it became the seat of the Jesuits for a short period, before returning to the Bonet family.

In 1618, the sale to the Franciscan Fathers determined the need to expand the building which was then used as a convent. In the eighteenth century, the complex, damaged by two earthquakes, was further modified and expanded with the construction of new dormitories for the friars. In 1996, the Municipality of Palermo started a “knowledge construction site” that allowed the discovery of the fifteenth-century palace. A long and demanding restoration work followed, recovering all the rooms, giving back to the city the extraordinary site and the charm of its internal courtyards and the magnificent cloister which, surrounded by the colonnade, connects the complex to the baroque church dedicated to Sant’Anna.

Fondazione Sicilia. Palazzo Branciforte

Opened to the public in May 2012, after a restoration by the architect Gae Aulenti, the Palace, which extends over 5,650 square meters of surface area, in addition to hosting the Sicilia Foundation’s management offices, offers space and usability to some of the Foundation’s prestigious Collections. On the ground floor are exhibited the archaeological collection of the Cavallerizza and the Mancini collection; on the main floor are kept the philatelic, numismatic, sculpture and majolica collections, together with the historic Library which conserves approximately 50 thousand volumes of the Foundation. From here you can also access the evocative rooms of the Monte di Santa Rosalia, a rare example still existing of wooden architectural composition, now designated to host temporary art exhibitions.

 The Auditorium ‘Sala dei 99’, equipped with the most modern technologies, can host conferences and cultural events, offering an exclusive space to those who wish to use the Palace for their meetings.

At Palazzo Branciforte, culture is also combined with good food and the flavors of the Mediterranean tradition. In one wing of the ground floor is set up the prestigious Branciforte Restaurant.
